The Arabs, who maintained a presence in Iberia from 711-1492 and who, for considerable periods up to about 1100, controlled practically all of today’s Spain and Portugal, designated the far western regions of the Peninsula “Al gharb” – meaning, quite simply, “The West”. Today “Al gharb,” or “Algarve” as it has become, denotes Portugal’s most southerly province and comprises the south western extremity of Europe running from Vila Real de Santo António in the East to Cape St Vincent in the west.

One of Europe’s best loved tourist destinations, the Algarve is perhaps most renowned for its coastline; nearly 200 Km's of spectacular variety, ranging from some of the most luxurious sandy beaches in the world to dramatically weathered cliffs or tranquil coves, sculpted by the ocean over millions of years. In short, the Algarve is a sun-seekers paradise with just about every form of water-sport on offer for those who wish to take a more energetic approach to soaking up the rays.

And, if the white ball and the fair-way call, all-year-round sun means that the Algarve is the place where you can enjoy a game of golf whatever the season. With about 25 golf courses, the region is a famous centre of golfing excellence. Here you will find some of the most dramatically located courses ever, set atop high cliffs, affording expansive views as far as the eye can see, over the ocean to the south and the mountains to the north. Many golf courses have their own golf academies.

Towns and villages possess an unspoilt heritage reflected not only in the architecture and the many historical monuments, but also in the local cuisine found at the many delightful restaurants and bars, many of which pride themselves on a particular local speciality, in addition to listing a range of delicious international dishes.
